We Came, We Saw, We Sat

So, it’s all said and done. Those who attended Victoria Film Fest 2014 came, saw and sat… and took it all in of course. We laughed out loud, we sighed with contentment, we swooned with love, we even cried like a tired baby on a bus (we did?), and we did it all for love of the film! This years fest brought over 58 movies to see ranging from inspiring documentaries to student shorts, to sweet heartfelt comedies to powerful dramas. As to be expected there were some hits (“Like Father Like Son”) and some misses (“Life’s a Breeze” if I had to choose one) but I have to say that overall, it was all killer no filler.

Having said this, the complaint board of me is “open” for business starting now and there are a few things I’d like to point out. One: though the films were great there was an overabundance of films from the good old US of A, something I hoped Canadians could move away from during a once a year opportunity to get our minds out of the North American perspective box. Having 16 Canadian films at Film Fest this year is pretty good, as I’m sure most of us remember a time when renting Canadian films used to mean you looked for them in the foreign section (renting? What’s that?). But the next runners up in terms of numbers was the US at 7, count em’ 7 films!  Not including the films that had US collaborations.  Next was the obvious UK at 4 and surprisingly Ireland at 3. On that note the complaint board is “closed” because the Irish films were great, boasting all the good elements which make a film truly Irish: innocently contradictory, cheeky, charming and funny as fuck, but I digress.

The complaint board is “open” again with a personal vendetta from the 2nd to last night of Film Fest.

Situation: I went to the wrong theatre by accident, and waited in line for half an hour with the wrong ticket. I know it was stupid, but we all make mistakes.

Solution: I realized I wasn’t going to make it to my original film screening across town, and since I’d already got my wrong ticket ripped and had already waited in line inside the theatre for half an hour, and since I was there to write anyway, then perhaps I could please have one of the last seats of the show I’d waited in line for. I thought this was a good solution, I was by myself, wouldn’t take up much room, was super sweet as pie, and in turn Film Fest and myself would still have used a vouched ticket, did it really matter it wasn’t for the right film? But the answer was no, which resulted in a vouched ticket that still sits unused in my hopeful bag and which left a whole film unseen by my film-caring, film-hungry eyes. Boo-erns on that regard Film Fest, I thought we were on the same team.

But I just have to shake my head and give a chuckle about that one, close the doors to the complaint board (forever this time, life’s too short) and remind myself of why I went to see the films I chose. One of the films I went to see because its story seemed entertaining (“Good Vibrations”), one I went to see because its story seemed important (“Last Song Before the War”), but one I went to see because it seemed to offer something unique and begged the question “is this story worth telling”? The film I’m thinking of is “The Rocket”, and yes, it’s story is worth telling.

The Rocket is an Australian film by Kim Mordaunt about a boy in Thailand searching for a home within his family, and a family searching for a home in the face of displacement in the name of “progress”.  The film was important because it showed a perspective from a part of the world most North Americans don’t get exposed to in film. Though it was completely humorous at times, it still depicted the hardships of poor families who are forced to find a home away from their traditional lands so that rich countries like ours can suck it dry for a large profit. However, even with that harsh reality as a backdrop to the narrative, the story, like everyones, was not really about hardship but about friendship, being true to oneself and finding a sense of belonging where there doesn’t seem to be any. I give this film more thumbs up than I have on both my hands. It’s films like this that keep Film Fest interesting, because it forces us to reach out of the conventions of the USA narratives, to delve into the vastness that is film all over the world and to hear the stories we otherwise might not get to hear.

We came, we saw, we sat… and we had a good time of it. In closing, what did I like best about Film Fest 2014? The films… (what, did you think I was going to have something enlightening to say?) Those who attend Film Fest do so because we are lovers of the medium. Whether it’s an uplifting foreign narrative, a heart-wrenching documentary, or a story of the bizarre or mundane we watch films because they are stories of life, and life is something shared between us all.
