How much has the use of facebook/twitter, and especially having your own website, increased people’s awareness of your work? Is there a forum you prefer or benefit most from?
Facebook is effective for event and release promotion, because almost everyone is on it and checks it incessantly. On the downside, I’m not one of these people who does that so I’ve actually missed out on gigs before that someone has messaged me on Facebook and I didn’t see the message through all the spam I get. The amount of people that use it as a primary communication method really bothers me. Especially when it’s people complaining because I haven’t gotten back to them yet, but they have my phone number and email and didn’t bother with trying those first. Twitter, I prefer because it’s really more straight to the point and doesn’t have the same level of being a wormhole of distraction all the time, clicking links and creeping on people’s pages until before you know it, it’s 2 hours later and you still haven’t sent the email you went online to send in the first place. It’s also a great way to keep in touch with other DJ/producer friends who are on tour all the time, because they’re always checking it and more often than email and Facebook, and it takes a lot less time to shoot a quick reply to a tweet rather than the latter. Twitter’s re-tweet function has been great for me because it also takes almost no effort to RT a post I’ve made regarding a mix or track or event, and all the other producers, DJ’s, and promoters I know are way more likely to share that info if it fast and easy. Soundcloud is really the best thing as far as social media goes. It’s grown to the point where I get a lot of random traffic now, and everyone has integrated it into their lives a little more, so I get lots of regular plays of my tracks and people seem to respond to the posts I make right away, because the streaming player is fast and easy to have on in the background, and the new feature of being able to navigate the site while whatever track you’re listening to keeps playing seamlessly, it makes it more realistic for all the really busy people to still take a minute to listen to something I’ve posted.
You also work alongside the mighty Lighta! crew which to my knowledge pushes more dubwise(reggae, dubstep, dancehall, and “futurebass”) vibes. Can you tell me a little bit more about what you are all onto these days, versus say where it all began?
Correct. Lighta! is an amazing crew of talented producers and DJ’s and I’m really happy to be a part of it. It’s more than just a DJ crew, it’s a family. The range of music that we are all into has always been extremely diverse, and each member of lighta! has their own very unique and distinct sound, yet we still all share a common thread of the “lighta! sound”, which is dubwise, bass oriented, has elements of both futurism and classics, and above all it’s more about creating a feeling and collective vibe, rather than specific sounds. The original conception of lighta! came from a club night that Michael Red started called “The Warm Up”, which was more focussed on dancehall reggae, and jungle. Those sounds have always been a core element of all of our history as a crew and as individuals, and that hasn’t changed. The evolutionary process of each of our styles has been a diverse selection starting with that dancehall/jungle roots and core love of experimental electronic music and techno to the beginning of the dubstep scene via grime, and the natural progression of our sound as we started new trends and followed various others,UK garage, baltimore club, footwork, trap, ballroom, to a point now where none of it can really defined with genres, just feelings. A fleeting moment in time, capturing an allusion to a sound.
Selection vs. production. Do you find yourself spending/wanting to spend more time producing and mucking about in the studio or spinning at parties?
I definitely spend way more time in the studio than I do at parties. Playing the shows accounts for usually no more than 3 nights in a week for me, whereas my studio time is essentially, all the rest of the time that you don’t see me out in a dance. I wouldn’t really want to have one without the other. I cherish my studio time that I have a lot of right now, but I could also be happy to get a little busier with my tour schedule and increase my presence in Europe.
What have you been spinning lately?
Good music, as always. That’s the only kind I play. DJ sets have been ranging from 120-170 BPM with no average and always whatever suits the venue/night and complements the other music on the bill.
What have you been producing lately, any projects I should keep on the radar for the winter, the future?
“What have you been producing lately?” is always a tough question for me because I’m always working on all matters of different things and it would be easier to ask what I’m not working on. I have a release coming on Modern Math Records in autumn 2013, which I’m really excited about, and a release with 10 Pin in early 2014 that I’ve been compiling for some time. Lots of ideas in the works for future that I’m hyped about, but I’m keeping them under wraps for the moment.
Do you play much of your own music in your DJ sets? For example I noticed you played your 10Pin tune Blackout at Hush in Vic this past Sept 6th.
I play my own music in sets often, when I feel it fits right. I definitely don’t try to force my own tracks into a set they don’t belong in, just because I made them, but I have been playing a lot of my original tracks lately, because I feel like I’m on to something that I haven’t found anyone else doing quite the same way yet.
To wrap up—for now—I want to ask two left field questions. If you were a dish and a drink to go with it, what would you be?
Jerk chicken with wine.
What is your favourite instrument/piece of hardware and why?
Korg MS20. It’s my favorite monosynth and most versatile one in its class, and I just end up using it more than anything else in my studio.
Well that was enlightening, and very much appreciated. Keenan—Taal Mala—indeed has a very distinct sound that is nevertheless noticeably influenced by his roots in dancehall, jungle, prime-time dubstep and sinister techno. Overall this badman stays well busy, cooking up in the studio and shocking dancefloors on the regular. We at VIBEUPS really enjoy his vibe and hope you do too.
