Voices: Self Evident

Self Evident in Yello

So, meow. Sometimes the epistemology of words are less meaningful than the artist’s definition or use of them, good thing we are talking about music. Below, Self Evident’s voice in the continuum.

In doing meow research and asking around, I started to realize that you are known of very seriously as a badman. And to be honest, your musical vibes resonate with my idea of what would go on in a badman’s head. What do you think?
Well as much as I love that word, it can have some really negative sentiments in Jamaican culture. Some songs about badmans describe them as murderers and not nice people. So I dont really wanna be associated with it because of that. My beats are mean, but I like to end sentences with smiley faces :)
Good to know that the music is rude, not you. Now the basics, where does the moniker Self Evident come from? And what is the focus of the project?
Self Evident is a name I’ve had for over ten years, can’t remember exactly what started that. I think the beats are the evidence or something. The focus of the project is always moving as I learn more things.
Well, you’ve definitely been trying out a variety of new vibes recently, 2013 was a pretty wicked year for you, am I right? Playing shows in the US, plus all the home shows in Van City; endlessly selecting, while also putting in WORK in the studio. With 9 hot-ass singles on bandcamp, a collab with HxdB out on Hot n Heavy, remix work, and a full self-titled LP through Long Island based South Fork Sound… Am I missing any highlights? Also, what’s on the near horizon for 2014?
Definitely my best year to date for gigs and releases yah thanks, was a good one. Working on lots of music right now. Lots of solo stuff, and also some new aliases. Lots of things up in the air right now, but hopefully I’ll be locking down some big releases soon.
Wicked. I’ll stay tuned, and if I hear new sounds that are eerily reminiscent of yours popping up, I’ll know it’s not a copycat. Seriously tho, that LP of yours has almost broken my desire to put genre labels on tracks any more. What do you think of genres these days?
I enjoy a lot of purist music and I also enjoy a lot of hybridized music. I try to be original, and create my own vibe.

Speaking of vibes, I’ve been pushing Sub|Div vibes for a minute in Vic now and I’ve realized something, when I tell (new)people about the influences the DJs are bringing to the tables and it resonates, the person shows excitement. However, people’s excitement for a more Hip-Hop leanin’ DJ feels different than being stocked for a dubstep heavyweight, or a classic house artist. So with that in mind, what do you expect your sound to evoke from people?
I wouldn’t really describe myself as a hip-hop leaning Dj lately. I have a lot of deeper tunes in the works and have been covering ground from ragga styles, future bassy stuff, RnB, and propa dubstep in my sets for the last year or so.
This past summer you travelled to NYC and Seattle, for gigs with the likes of Blind Prophet and Brenmar respectively. Can you describe the different vibes you experienced in these cities? Did you play very different sets?
The new wave of proper dub step is really big in NYC so I focused more on Dubstep and Grime for that set. For the Brenmar one I mixed it up a bit more with some bouncy future business, and some mean sexy beats. I spent most of my time in NYC on Long Island, which was really beautiful. Seattle is also a great city and the crowd really came out for that one.
And when traveling as Self Evident, what are the essentials we could find in your bag?
I play on serato and turntables mostly. Sometimes Cdjs. So really just a laptop. I grew up playing on Vinyl, but not so much these days.
Lastly, left field shit. If you were a meal and drink to go with it, what would you be?
Soup or salad followed by Roast Lamb and Roast veggies. Homemade ginger beer with some bourbon.
