Voices: Rhythmicon

Meow. Recently got the chance to hash it out with local hero Quinn. You know him as Rhythmicon, and should also know him to be half of Hi-Q Soundsystem. He shared some 2013 highlights, got sentimental over local fam–Sub|Div, and told me what dubstep means (to him)… As much of a gentleman as he pretends to be, smiling between sips of those gin & sodas, Quinn a badman! Catch him pon the decks, deep ina the gully side vibes. ya heard?!–nuff.

Years in the making and finally a reality, Hi-Q Soundsystem has now had live PA gigs ranging from Cenote’s lounge to a PK Sound powered Rifflandia festival stage. Add to that some studio time and you get the classy, rooted but ever-forward pushing single Urban Hustle on WolfSheep Records. Safe to say it’s been a good year for Hi-Q? How did this all come together, where does this passion for live PA jamming come from?

Ian and I are really enjoying working on our Hi-Q Project and I think people are into it. We used to work together and found that we shared a lot of the same musical taste; Ian is big on dub / reggae, I come from more of a jungle background and there’s a ton of crossover there. Ian’s been a big supporter of the dubstep scene in town since day one as well. We did a few gigs with Ian jamming on trumpet & keys overtop my DJ sets (such as the sub|div all LIGHTA! showcase at Sugar) and got a really positive response. People enjoy the live instrumental element – it provides a refreshing organic vibe that’s a bit more interactive for the audience. I honestly don’t know how engaging watching a DJ performance is for your average non-head club goer, but if someone is on stage rocking a bass guitar or trumpet there’s something else to feed off of there if that makes sense.

Hi-Q

I thoroughly enjoy performing as both acts. After over 10 years of DJing, with developing a live set (Ian on trumpet, bass guitar, keyboard, and melodica + myself on beats through Ableton) there’s certainly a learning curve that is exciting and challenging. I find thats keeping me on my edge right now; It’s not easy but there’s a real sense of fulfillment. It’s fun jamming out with your homies you know? We’ve got 2 tracks released now – Urban Hustle came out on the Wolf Sheep Records No.1 Compilation and Four Shadows came out on the Deluxe No.1 Compilation. We’re sitting on a few freshies right now too and are working on an EP for Wolf Sheep. You should see a few gigs tied into that release and we’d love to do a Vancouver show as well.Much respect to DJ Murge, Paris Parker, Erik Van Kobra and the rest of the collective for all the work they put into the label. If you haven’t been down to their new renovated space – go check that out for sure.

Now onto the Rhythmicon! I really love the vibe this moniker carries, and the versatility you’ve built around it over the years. I remember voting for you down at Hush, for the 2010 DJ competition finals, this was before I really knew you personally; at that point I was just another fan. Anyway, 2013, big year for the Rhythmicon! You headlined Slay Bay @ Basscoast, kept countless Sub|Div parties hot, and released Boogaloo on local WolfSheep records. Feelin’ successful? Ready for a bigger 2014, guns loaded? **Side note: who in town would you like to call out for a clash?!
Thx for the vote homie haha! That comp was really good and I felt I grew a whole bunch during it. Due to the dynamic nature of the DJ sets I had to prep a whole bunch of different sets of varying styles. At that point I was mostly known as a dubstep DJ so I think I surprised a few people with house, garage, UK funky, speed garage, drum and bass, etc sets before those became more common for me.This year’s been really good to me; playing Basscoast and working with WolfSheep Records has been awesome. It [Basscoast] was a career highlight for me so far – my timeslot was great, the floor was packed, and I was at Slay Bay which had a unique vibe to it. I was super pumped that pretty much everyone from Vancouver Island that was attending was there to support so things were proper lively. My set’s up on Soundcloud and there’s a few quick videos up on YouTube. I got to flex a few different styles and peppered some originals in there as well. For Rhythmicon productions and DJ sets next year, I’d love to get into some more instrumental grime. I’ve always loved that gritty urban UK vibe and the whole War Dubs producer clash in Sept was a big inspiration for me. Check out Rude Kid, Teddy, Preditah, and the new Logos if you want to peep the current sound.**Haha I haven’t done a proper clash in a minute. Outsider is always a fav to throw down with – he always comes out guns blazing. Playing b2b with him this Friday for Theory @ Hush w/ Daega Sound & Westerly. I’m also playing with Eames for Girl Unit for sub|div @ Lucky Bar Dec. 6th #boomhashtag.

Ok, let’s talk family, Sub|Div crew. Stand-out show(s) from this year? It’s been 4 years of Sub|Div! How you feelin’? Evidently Sub|Div’s ethos is as malleable as the very underground culture that spawned it, so what shifts have you seen come and go?

Man time flies. The four years have been excellent. Monolithium / Chris Long has put a tremendous amount of work into building up our little scene and I have so much gratitude for that. We’re super blessed to have a ultra-solid venue and staff @ Lucky Bar which has been home since day one. And the street team and supportive crowds that keep showing up – you are awesome. The nights really do have a fam vibe.

Everything evolves and morphs over time and sub|div is no different. Any shifts have been pretty organic I think. Of course there is less dubstep at the nights now, and there has been somewhat of a contribution to re-building up of house and techno which is good for Victoria. I’m no authority on those genres but peeps like Natron, Transient and Eames have helped back that resurgence. I remember playing UK garage b2b with Chris years ago back at Hush when there was virtually zero of it in town, and we had a blast. We wanted to see a scene for it and now garage or garage crossover tunes are more accepted again and dancefloors are receptive. That’s been personally really rewarding cause I love it so much.Off the top of my head, stand out shows for 2013 included playing with Brenmar at the start of the year. He’s a wicked DJ and I always lace his tunes into my sets so I was pumped on that. The vibe for Fred P was really good during the summer. He played one of the best house sets I’ve ever seen and the place was so deep in the groove. Khan @ Rifflandia was murderous. Playing the Wolf Sheep art parties has been a blast and of course Bass Coast.

KAHN WAS MURDEROUS, I agree. So hmmmeow, what does “dubstep” mean to you?

Dubstep for me will always be the 2006-20010 era sound (as varied as even that may be). Skream, Kromestar, RSD, Joker, etc.. All the stuff we played as The BIg Reds. Skeng. I spent the last 2 or so years primarily playing house / garage / UK funky but would still play it if the right gig called for it. Recently I’ve done a handful of Wednesday nights at The Mint – all vinyl dubstep & drum and bass and it’s really fun packing up the crates and rinsing out some of my favorites. I still play reggae dubstep down at The Reef some weekends and have had a positive response dropping some 140bpm at a few raves as well. (such as A Really Good Time 1+2). At this time I feel more drawn to instrumental grime, which was a huge influence on early dubstep.

Quinn UP

Lastly, if you were a dish and drink to go with it, what would you be?
How about butter chicken naan pizza. And always gin and soda. It’s in my DNA.
Wicked. It’s so good to know that your favourite people are sweatin’ for good reason, handling the heat of the kitchen/studio, all in the name of taste making. There is no doubt Quinn is the man to go to if you’re looking for that Urban Hustle.
