Your productions are so damn quality. I’d like to first ask about brotherhood. You produce, pull back-to-back vinyl drops and lately even play a live PA set together, is it tough or blissful to work together?
In any partnership, whether it be brothers or otherwise there will be tough and blissful moments, stressful and exciting, ups and downs. It’s part of the creative process to have all kinds of elements involved. It’s how you use the energy to catalyze what you’re doing that’s the important part. Having worked together in all sorts of musical capacities from symphonies to indie rock bands to a live trip hop and house trio, and with varying numbers of people and goals there was a good understanding when we decided to create Daega Sound. Given the nature of what we do we’ve of course had all sorts of situations, there have been some funny sleep dep train rides scrapin for leg room and on the other side there have been moments of excitement as we witness the coming together of something we’ve been working towards, or look out at the people enjoying the sound from on stage.
Do you have many creative differences?
Part of what makes Daega Sound and the sound behind it, is the sheer number of similarities we have when it comes down to music we’re feelin, and music we’re not. We have a very clear idea of what is the Daega Sound because of this. Of course there are nuances, one of us may prefer one tune to another, one effect to the other, we have different approaches to writing and producing which is necessary for keeping things fresh and new but it’s how we use this to build on the common ground. We have to be prepared to be somewhat flexible if it comes down to one of us feeling really strongly either for or against something in the creative process. Which happens, but mostly everything flows as it should. We have a deep amount of respect for each other and each others ideas which is something that is very good in any kind of project. And if one of us discovered something new we share it.
So you’re brothers but not “bros”, of course, because that’s a dirty word–as with brostep. What do you think denotes a “bro”?
Not too wade into this too deeply, but, as far as we know, brostep as a name was a way for people familiar with the original sound behind dubstep to differentiate between the newer sound and that of the original.
And, if you agree with me, why do you think it a dirty word?
Wouldn’t say its a dirty word. With music, it’s too important to the people that listen to whatever they like, to condemn any genre or sound. Everything has it’s place, people feel what they feel for whatever reason, and thats all good. Music is constantly impacting itself and changing as a result, with people liking and producing heavier and grindier sounds, you’ll see more deeper and melodic tunes coming out as a result.
Now onto the Daega Sound System. Would you explain the name to me?
When we were putting the concept together we wanted to have a name with a bit of weight as far as it sounded, some meaning behind it and also a unique way of spelling it. We changed the spelling of an old word we found in a dictionary after months of trying to come up with a name. Dega was the original spelling and it is basically process of dawn. The moment when the sun comes over the horizon, night ends and dawn begins, the sky turns from black to dark blue.
Love the imagery there, so much beauty in that idea, I can see how it inspires your music… I hear bass coast was a blast this year, with great visual art installations, among other things. So, what do you think of having visual components to accompany this, the low end spectrum, of dubstep/drumandbass?
What would the perfect place/time to play you music look like?
