Do you like electronic music? If you are responding in the affirmative, we respectfully ask you: “What exactly do you mean by electronic music?” Do you want to just dance to some sort of pulse? Or do you want more? How about music that will push your senses to a place that you did not know existed? Do you want a total experience that is more than the sum of its parts?Well have we got the festival for you.Over the next few weeks we, Pax and Steeve, invite you on our journey to, through, and from Resonance Festival 2013 (Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, Terra).
Heading to Resonance we did not know what to expect. After a slow morning start, July 26, 2013, we made our way along wooded island roads to the now-disclosed and not-so-secret-anymore location. This took longer than we had anticipated; grandmother Google Maps failed to account for construction and traffic. Or perhaps we lost track of time stopping at the grocery store to stock up on last minute cravings, or it could have been the quick loop home to grab a forgotten ticket. All of these happenings made the morning disappear in chomping organic carrots and proper dubstep CDs to sustain and entertain us youth aboard the motorized four-door Acura sedan.

We Prepare for Our Departure

Always aglow, burning with flare of real cosmic proportions, the fireball we call Sol hung high above our heads as we pulled into the parking lot. It took no time for the bearded man baring his hairy chest and greyscale camouflage capris to approach us, only to point us back from whence we came towards the direction of festival gates, a short drive away. We soon found out that backtracking on gravel “roads” with limited visibility is real fun… just watch for signs of other vehicles barreling along in the opposite direction.

We arrived at gates leading to Sunny Daze campground after our off-site parking lot experience; we prefer to do things out of order. Equipped with some prior festival experience, each of us felt—which seems quite naïve in hindsight—well-prepared for the event to come. We were in search of extreme nuance and we opened our internal vibes, parted with the stresses of our day jobs, chores and routines, and felt completely buoyant in the ethos of rave; drifting into a 3 day riverside party is good for the soul.

That morning, the Acura sedan was enthusiastically packed with three planned meals per day, a container of water for cooking, and a handful of other nonsense items essential for survival. The three of us, including our good friend Kevin, figured we were prepared for camping and dancing in the forest. We had no idea what we were getting into. And nothing could have prepared us.

Of the heartier foods we brought, most still sits on our pantry shelves, due to the necessity of snacking foods such as fruit, vegetables, and coffee for sustained energy. The water which we believed would not last us the weekend would prove to be more than enough; we thank the festival for having a complementary water station. In reality, because of the strength of community which existed at the festival, we’re sure that if we had arrived at the festival with nothing but our bare feet we would have left well-nourished.

Quick example: one item which we forgot in abundance was sitting utensils; we had only one cooler which could work at times as a chair. Fortunately, our new neighbour Ethan was radical enough to institute an open door policy for ‘our’ living room, a treeline-defined, grass-floored den with plenty of chairs and a hammock.

At the gates, the check-in process was very serious. A handful of gorgeous women acted as gate and guest-list guardians, and did so in a very serious manner. One of them even sported a shirt with a very explicit message, “I’m serious.” These guardians (Gs for short) were in the process of developing a system which would carry through for the rest of the weekend; developing because they were, like everyone else, thrown into the middle of a situation which no one person could really comprehend at the macro level. The road was not straight and there were bumps all along the way.

Once we were inside the festival grounds we were assisted by an ATV driving, dreadlocked powerhouse named Chris. As with the parking lot experience, we were at a loss for the ‘correct’ sort of ordering of things and we began to load the ATV trailer with all of our gear before having a camping site picked out. But both of us believe that a richer (or at least different) experience can be attained from doing things in the incorrect order and this time proved no different; luck or fate, Chris threw us smack-dab in the middle of the ‘artist area’. We were in the real shit now.

The neighbourhood was already populated but not enough so that we couldn’t find comfortable arrangements. We put down our bags, took a deep breath and smiled at each other, knowing these trees and these people would be our friends and hosts from here on in.

Despite His Foot Injury, Ethan Shows Us His Tree Yoga Prowess

It was here that we met Ethan (mentioned above), who, being among the most prepared participants present, soon lent us tools of all sorts.

This brings us to the list which we began to compile over the weekend.

List of Unknown Useables:

    -Rake
    -Shovel
-Broom (or a tree branch, totally compostable and semi-sustainable)
    -Silver Shiny Shit (Future Clothes)
-Costumes for yourself and at least one friend
    -Sitting utensils
    -Earplugs (seriously, you need these)
-Multi-purpose Head scarf-thing (long enough to act as handles while dancing)
-Red Filter for your flashlight/headlamp (don’t mess with your night vision, or others’ for that matter)
-Enough compliments to share with other people

Soon we had a camp, an absolute necessity for this type of festival (far less useful in an urban setting) and got some necessary nutrients into our guata. It was time for our initial reconnaissance of the grounds, fellow resonators, and overall party ethos.

This was a moment of tension.

As we walked around the festival grounds we were concerned by the lack of bass. The Beach stage—the smallest of the three stages—was still bumping but there was no sound emanating from either Axis stage or Centre stage. This was a rocky start which would prove to set the first day back, at our best guess, about three hours.

Kevin and the Beautiful Natural Surroundings

It was still a beautiful summer day and so, despite the lack of heavy hitting bass weight, we still enjoyed ourselves as we got to know our new neighbours. We began to realize that these people were the headiest of heady. On top of that, these were among the nicest and most genuine folk that we had ever come across. And with this it became apparent that, given the size of this festival, and that it was the inaugural year, this would be a crowd unlike that at any festival; a crowd more like a family reunion than just random strangers meeting up to dance in the forest (which is lovely too). This is because these were not random strangers, but rather complex groupings of social networks pulled together for one event.

These were the findings of our initial reconnaissance mission, and with this information we returned to our campsite for nutrition. From our tents, roughly a five minute walk from the Centre stage, we could not yet hear the music.

Then, while we sat in the Vortex, a massive church-tent lent to us by the fine people at The Madhouse, talking about our families and a continuous theme of ‘survival’, someone realized that we were now hearing some seriously heady music. It was night, and the party was about to begin. . .
