2015 marks the ten-year anniversary of Lightning in a Bottle Festival. This five-day event in Bradley, California, is put on by the Do LaB, a multimedia production company whose jaw-dropping, other-worldly structures and stages have invaded the likes of Coachella and Envision festival in Costa Rica.
The artists composing this year’s line-up are some of the most visionary in music today. Big electronic names like Flume, Odesza, and Tycho will grace the stages alongside an abundance of other gems. House music lovers are in for a treat from this year’s onslaught of renowned dance-floor destroyers, including the UK’s John Digweed and Australian DJ Thomas Jack. Koan Sound and The Opiuo Band will satisfy the thirsts of festival bass-heads, and even indie music fans will get their fill of eclectic hymns by acts like Made in Heights and Active Child.
A returning festival staple I am super stoked about, is the Lucent Dossier Experience, a performance troupe of singers, tribal musicians, and dynamic circus artists, always deliver an enticing and inspiring performance. Another lesser-known group on my personal bucket list is Rising Appalachia, a sister-duo from New Orleans whose unique brand of folk music emanates raw political commentary, sensuality, and spiritual-charge.
Lightning in a Bottle is known for its genre bending and blending, for showcasing those artists whose music and messages symbolize something pivotal and transcendent, and the amount of sheer talent and creativity compacted into one vicinity is undeniably extraordinary. Even those names you haven’t heard of will surely become new favourites!
This festival attracts a fun and foreword-thinking group of people, both artists and audiences alike. Besides soul-quenching stage performances, attendees will also have opportunities to participate in a variety of educational classes and green workshops designed to strengthen cultural connections to nature and inspire the co-creation of healthy, sustainable future communities.
For four years in a row, the festival has also received the Outstanding Award from A Greener Festival, for initiatives it takes in composting, recycling, healthy food, and environmental management. Always taking steps to towards future improvements, 2015’s festival will have a nifty new layout, including bigger shade structures to escape that blazing California sun, and additional water stations to keep bodies hydrated for maximum festival frolicking.
A place, a time and space, where all facets of goodness collide, spark, electrify, and dance their pants off. That is essentially Lightning in a Bottle in a nutshell, or to be more precise, a bottle. It will send you home not only with wicked memories, but some fantastic culture-shifting ideas and skills to integrate into the world.
